Dean family papers, 1758-1905 (bulk: 1840-1905)
Scope and Contents
The Dean Family Papers contains documents relating to the Benjamin and Alice (Lofthouse) Dean family of Clitheroe, England, Lowell, Mass., and Providence, R.I. The genealogical interests of Benjamin’s children and grandchildren are apparent throughout the collection; besides genealogical notes and charts, there is an 1867 letter by Benjamin’s brother Robert Dean of Manchester, England in which he provides genealogical information for his niece in America. The collection contains several documents with genealogical information including scrapbooks of Dean and Mumford family obituaries, photographs (most identified), and handwritten copies of a 1842 court summary of Benjamin Dean’s application to become a U.S. citizen, and a deed for the sale of family property in England that provides information concerning Benjamin’s parents. Much of the genealogical information scattered throughout the collection was compiled into a handwritten genealogy with watercolor illustrations of landscape scenes in Clitheroe, England painted by Robert Dean (folder 3). The 1864 letter by Sarah Dean to her sister, Alice (Dean) French, includes a handwritten copy of a letter sent to Sarah by their brother, Peter Dean, from Idaho City describing his “hard experience on the journey” (folder 7). The page preceding “God’s dealings with my soul” by Lorinda (Bates) Ballou Daniels (1798-1833) has birth, marriage, and death data for the families of Arnold Ballou (1792-1816) and Moses Daniels Jr. (1794-1862) (folder 17). Among the obituary clippings in the green binder is a handwritten copy of a bible record for the John B. and Mary (Tillinghast) Mumford family of Newport, RI (folder 27).
