Charles Calvin Stuart papers, 1752-1974
Scope and Contents
This collection consists of photocopies of source documents used by Charles C. Stuart to compile the genealogical data on Charles’ own family, his ancestors, and the ancestors of his wife for the NEHGS pedigree form (see folder 5). The source documents include birth, marriage, and death certificates, Bible records, genealogical correspondence and various documents concerning the ancestors of George and Mary (Lewis) Stuart. Charles also supplied copies of documents concerning Charles Palfray Bosson (brother of Charles’ grandfather) and Robert Josselyn (brother of Charles’ great grandfather). In addition, there are photocopies of letters sent to Mary Morse of Otego, NY from 1832 to 1883; however, it is not known how this material relates to the rest of the collection.
Charles Palfray Bosson was born 21 October 1839, married 2 September 1869 Georgiana May Folsom (1842-1880), and died 11 April 1918. Charles served as a sergeant major in the 42ndRegiment of Massachusetts Volunteers from 3 September 1862 to 20 August 1863. He was the author of the History of the Forty-Second Regiment Infantry, Massachusetts Volunteers, 1862, 1863, 1864 that was published in Boston in 1886. The documents include copies of Surgeon’s morning reports (1862) and correspondence to Charles concerning military operations in the Louisiana area (1863), the capture of Galveston, TX (1863), the La Fourche action (1863), and the attack at Bradrear City including a list of Union prisoners captured and casualties (1880).
Robert Josselyn was born 16 December 1810 in Pembroke, Mass. Robert was the friend of Jefferson Davis. He served in Jefferson Davis’ regiment in the Mexican War and served as his private secretary from 11 March 1861 until he was appointed secretary to Governor John R. Baylor of the Arizona Territory on 14 February 1862. The documents include copies of his licenses to practice law in Virginia (1832), Mississippi (1836-1840), and Louisiana (1865) as well as his copyright notice for The Coquette (1878), etc.

Biographical / Historical
Charles Calvin Stuart was born on 16 November 1909 at Richardson, New Brunswick, Canada. Charles was the son of Frederick Clinton Stuart (1880-1964) and wife Ruth Cushing Bosson (1880-1954). Frederick Stuart and family immigrated to the United States in September 1916. Frederick was naturalized in Boston on 8 February 1926 and Ruth on 7 October 1929. Charles Stuart married Mary Caroline Lewis on 30 May 1943 at Reading, Mass. Mary was the daughter of Herbert Walter Lewis (1887-1953) and wife Harriet Lavinia Richardson (1886-1959).
