Charles Pelham Greenough Collection
Scope and Contents
The collection is divided into two series. The first consists of miscellaneous English and American correspondence and a diary, dated 1770 to 1854. The second contains English, Irish, Scottish, and Welsh probate records dated 1648 to 1879, including letters of administration, inventories, and wills.

Biographical / Historical
Charles Pelham Greenough, son of William Whitwell and Catherine Scollay (Curtis) Greenough, was born on 29 July 1844 in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He graduated from the Boston Latin School, Harvard (1864), and Harvard Law School (1869). Following his graduation from law school, he became a partner with Robert M. Morse, Jr. in the firm of Morse, Stone and Greenough. In 1879, he opened a private law practice. Greenough served as secretary, treasurer, vice president, and president of the Boston Bar Association, and was active in founding the Boston Legal Aid Society, where he was president from 1900 to 1914.
Greenough was a member of various cultural institutions, including the Massachusetts Historical Society and the Society for the Preservation of New England Antiquities, and was also a trustee of the Boston Public Library and the Museum of Fine Arts. He was elected a resident member of the New England Historic Genealogical Society in 1845 and became a life member in 1863. He died at Brookline on 21 November 1924.
