Idella Sophia Hewes Horsefield collection, 1854-1935.
Scope and Contents
This collection contains twenty folders of genealogical research and family papers relating to Idella Sophia (Hewes) Horsefield. Idella, with the help of Alberta M. Trethewey of Roslindale, Mass., traced her heritage back to England in the late 1400's and early 1500's. Idella became a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution in 1938 due to her descent from Pardon Sheldon, a Lieutenant in the Revolutionary War. This collection includes genealogical information for the Fuller, Hewes, Olney, Rogers, Sheldon, Emmons and Swan families. The collection also contains original documents including two Bible records, a diary, diploma, military records, and scrapbook. There is a Bible record for the William and Amelia (Rogers) Hewes family 1773-1916; a Bible record for the Amos G. and Mary Amelia (Hewes) Jones family 1840-1916; and an 1854 pocket diary of Reverend William Hewes (1808-1890) then living in Pembroke, NH. The military records concern Charles Frederick Hewes (1858-1925), a soldier who served with a US Cavalry regiment in San Antonio, Texas, and include a military commission certificate, copy of The Soldier's Hand-Book, leave pass, and marksman certificates, 1884-1892. The scrapbook of notes and poems was commenced at Hudson, NH in 1862 by William Orville Hewes (1848-1909) and contains entries to 1864. The diploma from the Wheelock School was issued to Idella Sophia Hewes in 1935.
