Sampler by Sarah Chandler
Scope and Contents
An exemplary silk embroidery on linen depicting an arched needlework frame including the letters of the alphabet above a sentimental and loving poem directed to the young seamstresses' parents and entitled "Filial Love". Shown with a treed landscape, a manor house, swimming ducks and floral sprays all executed in fine colors of yellow, blue, gold, apricot and celery. Finished with an intricate and elaborate floral border. Complete with a plain gold leaf frame. Poem reads "Next unto God Dear Parent I Address / Myself to you in humble thankfulness / For all your care and charge on me bestowed / The means of learning unto me allowed / Go on I pray and let me still pursue / The golden Art the vulgar never knew".
