Joseph B. and William A. Read papers, 1830-1926.
Scope and Contents
Autobiographical account of Joseph B. Read with accounts of teaching, Baptist missionary, and a detailed description of his experiences as a Union soldier in the Massachusetts 58th regiment, where he acted as war correspondent for Bristol County newspapers. The collection also contains the personal papers of his son, William Alfred Read, a lawyer in Washington, D.C. William Read recorded two volumes of family memoirs and he also included miscellaneous comments on court cases as well as personal notes. Concluding the collection is a volume of genealogical notes on Read and allied families which William Read prepared from 1900-1910.

Biographical / Historical
Joseph Brown Read, 1830-1903, was born at Dighton, MA. At sixteen, Read taught his first school at Dighton, a ten-week winter assignment. He continued in other similar assignments and as an educational administrator until 1863. Then, he turned his career interests to ministry in the Baptist church in various Massachusetts towns, as well as in NH and VT. He served as a Baptist missionary in Pueblo, CO in 1883.
