The career papers, 1804-1961, of Coert du Bois mainly consists of letters, notes, and diaries reflecting du Bois' service in the U.S. Army as a lieutenant and Chief of Engineers with the 10th Engineers in France (1917-1918); State Dept as Consul to Naples (1920) and to Port Said (1922); administrator of the Visa Office in Washington, D.C. (1924-1927); Consul general at Batavia, Java (1927-1930); foreign service inspector at Naples, Italy (1931-1937); a member of the Anglo-American Caribbean Commission (1942-1944); and as a U.S. delegate to the United Nations Security Council's Committee of Good Offices, Java in 1948. Among du Bois' private papers is correspondence between du Bois and his wife, Margaret, and some papers of his daughter, Jane. In addition, there is an incomplete manuscript of du Bois' autobiography. The collection also includes 126 personal photographs, 1897-1960, and a book of sketches drawn by du Bois between 1909 and 1955.
