Charles Norris papers, 1794-1832.
Scope and Contents
Consists of business correspondence received by Charles Norris between 1807-1818. These letters are chiefly from printers, publishers, booksellers, paper makers, and other individuals associated with the book trade in New England towns, especially those in NH, MA, NYC and Phila. Also included among the correspondents are several authors, editors, and clergymen, notably Amos Jones Cook, a minister of Fryeburg, ME; Dudley Leavitt, an almanac editor; Abraham Maxim, the editor of music books and other publications; and Rufus Porter, future founder of the journal, Scientific American. These items outline the nature and range of Norris' business activities and, in part, reflect the impact of the War of 1812 on New England's economy. The correspondence is complemented by bills and receipts indicating sums paid by Charles Norris & Co. for paper, skins, binding, and other trade-related supplies and services between 1809-1816. In addition, the collection includes several business letters from 1831-1832, legal documents concerning the partnership between Ranlet and Sawyer, and a small quantity of Norris' private papers, 1794-1819, consisting principally of letters from relatives and friends, documents relating to Ranlet's estate, and bills and receipts for personal expenses.
