Higgins family papers, 1741-1925.
Scope and Contents
Consists of the letters and diaries of Milton Prince Higgins (1842-1912), a mechanical engineer, industrialist, and pioneer in technical education, and his wife, Katharine Elizabeth Chapin Higgins (1847-1925), dating from 1859-1925. These documents refect her education at Manchester, NH; their courtship, engagement, and marriage, family life, and social activities; and his duties as superintendent of the Worcester Polytechnic Institute and President of several manufacturing firms in the city, including the Norton Emery Wheel Co. There is also a large group of correspondence concerning Higgins' eldest son, Aldus Chapin Higgins (1872-1948) and his wife, Edgenie Gertrude Brosius Higgins (1870-1911). These letters, written between 1880-1911, concern his law studies and employment in the U.S. Patent Office at Washington, D.C.; her education at Vassar College and work as a high school teacher in the nation's capital; their European travels, courtship, marriage, and domestic relations.
