The family material includes four letters from Ivory Hovey’s sons, Dominicus (b. 1740), Ivory III (b. 1748), and Samuel (b. 1750), who took part in or witnessed notable events of the Revolution. They described evacuation of New York (1783), Siege of Boston (1775-1776), the reading of the Declaration of Independence to the troops, and the American retreat from Ticonderoga. Ivory also received a letter in 1781 from his daughter, Olive (Hovey) Pope (b. 1746), living in Wells, Maine, that describes the wilderness in which she and her husband were attempting to farm.
